The history of the architectural complex
The Bahouddin Naqshband architectural ensemble is situated in Qasri Orifon village, 12 km north-west of Bukhara where Khodja Bahouddin Naqshband (1318-1389), very famous historical figure and outstanding Sufi, was born and buried.
His mother, closest relatives as well as apprentices and disciples were, too, buried in this village.
Bahouddin Naqshband's cult was highly venerated among folks. The rulers, too, paid a considerable attention to this architectural ensemble.
According to the historian Hasan Kisari, in the 16th century, Abdulazizkhan of the Shaybanid dynasty ordered to erect several significant buildings, including khonaqo, mosque, and Bahouddin Naqshband dakhma (burial vault).
The Bahouddin Naqshband complex consists of the knonaqo (16th c.), the Abulfayzkhan mosque (18th c.), Hakim Qushbegi mosque (19th c.) and minaret (18th c.).
The history of the museum.
Set up in 1993, "Tariqati Naqshbandya" museum is dedicated to the 675th anniversary of Bahouddin Naqshband. The exhibition highlights the themes of Sufism, origins and formation of the Naqshbandya teaching and its influence among the peoples of the Muslim world.
Most valuable are the 19th - century manuscript of the Koran, praying rug, and Sufi outfit.
In 1995, in a modern building of the Bahouddin Nashband architectural complex, a scientific center was founded to study Bahouddin Naqshband's spiritual legacy, to establish scientific ties with international scholars and orientalists as well as to work out joint research projects. The center has close relationships with the scholars and Sufis of Michigan, USA and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The center publishes the "Naqshbandiya" newspaper.
